Day 3: Funded! THANK YOU!
about 3 years ago – Thu, Oct 14, 2021 at 11:53:38 PM

THANK YOU!

We hit our funding goal this afernoon! I'm so grateful to have the support of each one of you. It's hard to believe that this little story idea that popped into my head ten years ago now has people all over the world backing it, book after book. With every cycle I just get more excited to get this whole story done and into your hands.

Land Speed Record

And while the funding amount is important, even better is the number of backers. I just looked back for comparison to see that this campaign has easily surpassed my previous for number of backers in the first 24 hours! In fact, we went up from 80 backer to 126 for the first 24 hours, and that is awesome. From book 1 to 2 we increased backers by 50% and if I could do that again this time around it would be astounding. It will be tough--that last campaign was in peak Covid, and I'm running a shorter campaign this time, but this is a great start. Thank you for being here early and  spreading the word!

Time to warm up my postcard writing hand.

So, it's time to stretch my hands because I'm going to be filling out a whole lot of postcards. Every one who backs before Friday at 5 pm, from anywhere in the world, gets a postcard with art by Geoff Weber and a message from me. I love this reward until it's time to do it, then I hate it, then when they are sent I love it again. But before that, I've got to get thank you messages out to all of you. These are good problems to have.

Again, thank you for your support.

Day 2: UNLOCKED MILESTONE 1: ANDRASTE #1-3 by Honor Vincent!
about 3 years ago – Wed, Oct 13, 2021 at 01:26:10 PM

Boom! Day 1 is in the books and as of 930 am we’ve already hit 126 backers! That means every backer gets the first release in our ALL-STAR DIGITAL BUNDLE. Congrats! This update is open to the public but I'll follow it with a second one only for backers with a link to the books. You get 'em today!

Andraste is a fantasy-tinged reimagining of the Boudican rebellion in first century Britannia. No, I didn’t know what that was either. It follows the story of Boudica, also known as the Warrior Queen, as she leads her Iceni people against the overwhelming force of the Roman Empire, with some mystical interventions along the way. It's also about what war does to families, the Roman propaganda machine, Druidic rituals, interdimensional mastiffs, and mouthless death goddesses. You heard me, it’s kinda nuts. The writing is sharp and fresh, the art is masterful, the Latin accurate (I assume). And you get the entire series to date, books 1-3!

I’m particularly excited to offer this amazing series from Honor Vincent because as a comics creator she’s a great inspiration to me. A few years ago, I was deep in the process of making By the Time I Get to Dallas #1, and it was slow, expensive going. I was committed to finding a great team of artists and paying them upfront to make my book, and hoping I’d find an audience somehow, somewhere. For writers who can’t draw there are many dark arts you might use to coax/cajole/dupe/lowball/screw an artist into working really hard to make you a book that will probably never make a dime for anyone. I’ve never been down with that approach, I pay my artists their going rate up front. But I tell you, it feels lonely laying out thousands of dollars via PayPal to people across the globe whom you’ve never met, all to draw some pictures for your silly story that you THINK might be cool to you and like three other people. Then I saw some comic world buzz about this blog by Honor: What does making a comic cost? Part 1: Getting started. In it she bravely told us exactly what she was spending on each step of her own first comic book while doing it the right way paying her team up front. It turns out that I wasn’t going crazy: making your own comic book really is HARD, SLOW and EXPENSIVE! Honor’s blog was a smoke signal in the distance letting me know I wasn’t the only crazy person out there. That’s a relief, right?

Well, it turns out Honor isn’t crazy at all. She’s already produced three dazzling issues of Andraste. She’s just tabled at New York ComicCon. And she’s got a SECOND exciting series live now on Kickstarter: NEW RAT CITY. This time she’s taking her talents to the Manhattan of 2080, where environmental degradation has led to a very different, but sadly believable, city where rats and weirder creatures rule. Up against these vermin are some hopelessly outmatched exterminators, and I can’t wait to read their story. Get in on it quick, the campaign closes on 10/18. And tell her I sent you!

That's all for now. With any luck tomorrow's update will be about our second Milestone!

Day 1: Back on the road to Dallas with books 1-3!
about 3 years ago – Tue, Oct 12, 2021 at 11:39:58 AM

Hello and welcome to By the Time I Get to Dallas 1-3: ER doc apocalypse continues!

This is my fourth KS campaign for this project, and I’ve never been more excited to share the story, the art, the special covers, and other cool new stuff. I’ve learned a thing or two over the prior campaigns, and my Spidey sense is telling me this one should be successful and a lot of fun. I'm psyched to hear from my prior backers and meet a few new ones.

What to Expect

I’ll update pretty regularly for the first week, then back off a a bit. Updates will be a range of stuff, from behind the scene info about the books, to focusing on specific rewards, and sharing some other amazing projects that are running along with us. When the is something mission critical to tell you about I’ll call attention to it in the title, so you can pick and choose your updates.

Milestones and the ALL-STAR DIGITAL BUNDLE!

I’m super psyched to offer a new feature this time around that will add a ton of fun and value to each and every pledge. For the first time, I’m including complete books from some of my favorite indie comics creators in an ALL-STAR DIGITAL BUNDLE! I’ll add these books one at a tine as Milestone rewards. It just so happens that bunch of creators who I admire most in the word of indie comics are also running campaigns this month for great projects. I’ve roped them in to give my backers terrific stuff that you would normally need to buy at their online store, Comixology, etc. I’ll send an update on each milestone, but I’ll reveal them NOW so you can check out this amazing stuff now and get pumped and maybe back their campaigns too.
