Because I said so
As usual, I approach the final three days of a By the Time I Get to Dallas campaign filled with regret and longing for all the things I wanted to do to promote this book but couldn’t because there are only so many hours in the damn day. One thing I WON’T regret is giving you all the ALL-STAR DIGITAL BUNDLE. It’s been a blast talking about books besides my own and getting you access to a great digital pile of indie comics goodness. As we approach 230 backers I’m excited to introduce the next addition to the Bundle: SAVAGE SASQUANAUT#1 by Wes Hartman! I’m using my power as Supreme Campaign Ruler to release Sasquatch early to make sure you have time to read it and check his campaign running through Friday. There will be a backers-only update after this one with a link to the book.
Want to hear the single best tag line I’ve ever read for a comic book?
“Bigfoot’s in space and LOVING it.”
Man, it doesn’t get any better than that. I know everything I need to know from six words. And so do you, but I’ll tell you more because it’s fun.
Bigfoot has been blasted into space by NASA because, well, he’s the awesomest thing on Earth so he’s clearly the best candidate to kick ass in space. Of course he gets captured by mean aliens, leads a spaceship mutiny, catches the attention of a powerful, lovely, six armed alien Empress who thinks Bigfoot might just be Emperor material. Or would make a nice rug. Also, Russia is chasing Bigfoot with an CosmoYeti of their own because that’s just the kind of day old Sask is having. But it’s all good—he’s tall, he’s hairy, he’s got claws and people just like him. Maybe he doesn’t need his forest after all.
Book 1 is now part of our bundle, but the whole six-issue arc through its thrilling conclusion is live on Kickstarter so you can get the whole enchilada right now (Bigfoot loves Mexican food. I’m making that up.) Wes reliably has the best variant covers, I want them all, and his whole presentation is top notch. Head over there and grab a handful of Sasquatch and tell him I sent you.
Day 21: Final push, milestones, I'm on a podcast, and other great projects to check out!

Race to the finish!
Time to buckle down for a flurry of Kickstarting as we hit the final 5 days of this campaign! There is usually a pretty good spike in traffic in the last few days so I'm hoping to finish strong by bringing back a bunch more old backers and finding new ones as well. Here's what's new:
I'm a podcast guest!
The Comixlaunch podcast, hosted by comics creator, publisher and educator Tyler James, has been a staple for me for years. My family has gotten very used to Tyler's voice echoing from various parts of the house at odd hours of the day and night. It's a great resource for creative types who crowdfund, but it's really about so much more than that. It's about, like, life, man. I don't know about all that, but during almost two years of Covid craziness I’ve found Tyler's show a great way to stay grounded and focused on making art and getting it front of people. So I'm very excited to be on this week's episode. Check it out!
Here's a reminder of all the awesome stuff you have already unlocked and the stuff we are so, so close to unlocking. Backers, you can find the links to the unlocked books as their own updates on this campaign page.
Other cool stuff
October saw maybe a record number of comics projects on Kickstarter. That makes the competeion tougher, but the more people on the platform, the better it is for everyone. Here are some excellent projects I can vouch for:
Monster Matador
A delightfully demented Kaiju throw-down
What if there were huge monsters (I guess the cool people call them Kaiju) roaming the earth, and the only thing between us and them was a crazy matador with a red cape and a saber. Yeah, I'd be nervous. Luckily, this is a comic book and not real life and it is madcap crazy comic goodness. This book takes its cues from classic 80's action flicks like Predator, with a team of tough guys pulled together and dropped into South Africa to gradually get whittled down by scary beasts until only the strongest/most insane of them remain.
A 125+ page book starring demons, Lovecraftian monsters, psycho killers and much, much more.
I may have missed Halloween while working in the ER, but honestly, there it’s kind like Halloween every day. But you don’t have to work with me for scares, you can check out this killer horror anthology brought to you by a bunch of creepy creators, notably Clay Adams, I guy boost here a lot cause he makes crazy brilliant stuff like Pregnant Bitches of War and Deadskins.
Wait, what?! Goddammit, I thought I had the only Boston apocalypse story!! Actually, I’ve known about this very cool book for many years. I picked up the first issue from Joel Lolar at a convention way back when I was first pitching my story to publishers, and I’ve always had in my mind as an example of exactly why you don’t need a frickin’ publisher. Maybe you’re tired of zombies and global warming, so let’s go the other way and see what my beloved city would be like in never ending winter. This gritty black and white epic tale of murder, survival and revenge is finally collected in big TPB that I’m going to back right now.
Looking for something a little deeper than monster fighting matadors and things that go bump in the night? No problem, I’ve got an anthology that's a bit deeper, trippier, thoughtful even. From reflections on gratitude to horse fights to the kindness of cryptids and beyond, BECOMING brings together magic and science, comedy and darkness, joy and discomfort, pleasure and pain. The folks at Oneshi press have the anthology thing down so it’s sure to deliver.

Day 17: MILESTONE REWARD UNLOCKED: NIGHT WOLF #1-2 by Rob Multari!

AROOO! Werewolf!!
200 backers!! Congrats, us. This milestones unlocks another kick ass comic book for your ALL-STAR DIGITAL BUNDLE! I’m proud to introduce NIGHT WOLF #1-2 by Rob Multari. Backers you'll shortly see a backers-only update with a link to these books.
Rob seriously knows how to create a top notch comic story. He bring in awesome artists and makes a incredibly polished product. If you want classic teen werewolf fantasy, and who doesn’t, this book is where you go.
We all feel weird in high school. But only a few of us discover we are imbued with the power of an ancient race of werwolves. That’s what happens to Rodney Marcelli, and things get more complicated when he learns he must use that power not to best the school bully in basketball, but to defeat the supernatural Dark Covenant, all while staying ahead of the meddlesome FBI. Luckily Rod has some more experienced werewolves to guide him in his quest, including the not unattractive Snow Paw, a shewolf hailing from the 19th century Scottish Highlands and bracingly resistant to modern fashion cues. Also, they all get swords!
It turns out now is a great time to get in on this story because Rob has aunched a Night Wolf spinoff series, Snow Paw. It's blowing the doors off Kickstarter, and you’ll be glad you snagged #1 at the very start of what looks to be an epic run. Check it out now and tell him I sent you!
Day 14: I’m altering the deal. Pray I DO alter it further.

TWIST MY ARM
Let’s talk about Milestones. My plan was with every 75 backers I’d unlock a new release in my ALL-STAR DIGITAL BUNDLE. And we unlocked the first two no problem, getting you all a total of five awesome complete comics: ANDRASTE #1-3 by Honor Vincent and BROKENLAND #1-2 by Drew Morrison. I based those milestone goals on the last campaign where we hit 360 packers, but that was a weird time when there were very few comic projects running. Right now there are A LOT of comics running so it’s a little tougher to pull in audience. 186 backers with 11 days to go is awesome, but I want to hot milestones to make SURE I give you this great stuff. So I’m cheating, because it’s my game and ALL SHALL HAVE PRIZES. If you want all these great books, you just gotta spread the word to a couple friends who have your same impeccable taste.
Updated Milestone Schedule:
75 Backers: ANDRASTE #1-3 by Honor Vincent — UNLOCKED!
150 Backers: BROKENLAND #1-2 — UNLOCKED!
200 Backers: NIGHTWOLF #1-2 by Rob Multari -- SO CLOSE
230 Backers: SAVAGE SASQUANAUT #1 by Wes Hartman
260 Backers: WILD NATURE #1 by David Taylor
More cool stuff
Here’s another book I highly recommend by my friend Beserat Debebe at Etan Comics. Beserat has been busting out hit after hit with African inspired superheroes, fantasy adventure and now historical-based sci-fi! With his new title he takes the true story of Ethiopia’s resistance to the Italian invasion of 1896 and turns it into an intergalactic Game of Thrones-style epic. This creative team does top notch work every time, so I highly recommend you get in on the ground floor with #1.
