Campaign Wrap Up: We did it again!
almost 5 years ago – Sat, Nov 13, 2021 at 01:09:13 PM

Where were we?

After the close  on Friday I took two days away from all things comic book and Kickstarter related, and then got destroyed by two tough days at work. Please be kind to the health care workers in your life right now; independent of Covid issues, we have serious staffing, equipment and bed shortages across the whole system, making conditions very hard on us and our patients. But in between shifts I'm back to see what I’m supposed to be doing with this project and life in general.

Quick recap

It’s official, we funded this thing thanks to 287 awesome backers! 210 of you were returnees and 77 are new to the Dallas story. Along the way we unlocked milestone rewards from five of terrific creators. We didn’t quite hit the 300 backer milestone but it’s entirely possible I’ll pretend we did and go ahead with the Flipsnack service for the next round of digital Dallas rewards, I need to play with it bit.

Thank you!

Let me once more say thank you to all of you for backing this crazy thing. And for everyone who spread the word, an extra thank you. And to every one of you who responded to my emails or posted comments and questions, thank you!

Extra special thank you to my wife Ethel and my kids Virginia and Ezra for being patient and supportive. And thank you to all my friends and family who have put up with this for so long.

I owe a huge thank you to all the wonderful artists who have contributed. This story would be nothing without their work:

By the Time I Get to Dallas: Juanfran Moyano (pencils), Dario Fas Marin (inks), Jay Moyano (colors), Jaymes Reed (letters)

Trinity Project: Greg Woronchak (line art), Jason Finestone (colors), Jaymes Reed (letters)

Cover artists: Joe Mulvey, Chris Sotomayor, Brian Dawson

Postcard artist: Geoff Weber

Logos, web design: Mike Harrington

Printing: Rich Boye at Comic Impressions

Thank you to my All-Star Digital Bundle contributors for giving us all access to their amazing work: Honor Vincent, Drew Morrison, Wes Hartman, Rob Multari, David Taylor. I’m happy to report they all funded their latest projects, so be on the look out for more great work from them.

Thank you Comixlaunch podcast host Tyler James, and Explain Yourself Livestream hosts Kevin Joseph and Will Allred.

What’s next?

  • I might officially change my name to Doc Apocalypse. Thank you Tyler James!
  • I owe a bunch of thank yous to the backers from the last week of the campaign, I will do those this week.
  • About 150 of you were Early Bird backers wand will be getting your reward, a postcard from me. However, I’m going to wait to get your mailing address until I’m close to sending the physical rewards as well, this will make the survey process smoother I think. This could change though.
  • The reward survey will be from me via Backerkit. If you aren’t familiar, it is a service that helps Kickstarter stuff work better. I’ll update again about this when the time comes.
  •  International shipping will be finalized at the time of the survey when we are close to shipping.
  •  What about the book? Oh yeah, that. I need to finalize the lettering script for the final 26 pages, Jaymes it chomping at the bit to finish up book 3. I have the final scene of Trinity Project to script and get to the artists. I have a Dallas inside cover to design and produce, some other back matter. One foot in front of the other.

60%!

This is my fourth campaign and my third book, and I’m just as excited as ever to make this story a reality. Well, not actual reality, that would be not so good. When I think about how many steps are ahead of me to produce, fund and ship the whole series I get vertigo, but then I step back and realize I’m now 60% done with the story (when I ship #3) and this project is all going according to plan. Most important, the books are coming out great, better than I ever had a right to expect. It feels slow, but 50+ pages of quality comic produced per year is pretty damn good if you ask me. So I’ll finally leave you alone for a while, buckle down to make these books real. I’ll update you with important steps along the way.

Please feel free to ask me questions at

Thank you again for everything!

Day 25: LAST DAY: the final stretch goal, a chance to die in this book, drinking Death in the Afternoon, and more
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Nov 05, 2021 at 01:08:25 AM

It is the very last day. Let’s keep it snappy, Devonshire.

Milestone Earned

When we hit 260 backers just now we did in fact earn that Milestone Reward #4, Wild Nature #1. So we can all feel legit about that. Now go back David Taylor's amazing book!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dftaylor/wild-nature-1-and-2-make-miami-murder-dystopian-comics

One more true stretch goal

I don’t know if we can get to 300 backers, we’ve got an outside chance, but if we do it will unlock a  reward that is fun to say: Flipsnack! It’s a paid service that presents digital books in a much more satisfying and easy-to read way than the usual scrolling PDF. It lets you flip the pages and presents the double splash pages (I have several in these books) the way they were meant to be seen. It allows other cool stuff I’d like to play with like embedded sound and audio. I’d like to improve my game for all the digital backers out there, so I’m hoping I can make the investment in Flipsnack soon. Fingers crossed!

Two BIG rewards are still up for grabs

  1.  Multibook recurring role cameo: For the first and only time I'm offering a cameo of a character with a significant role not only on multiple pages but in multiple books, and it is still available. Cameo can be age 35-55, male or female. You get to be a jerk and die a gruesome death! Chance of a lifetime here!
  2.  Original cover art: For the first time ever I get to offer original cover art from a Dallas comic book! Until now all Dallas art has been digital, but guest star Joe Mulvey did the Limited Edition Wraparound variant for Dallas #3 with good old pencil, ink and paper (the final colors by Chris Sotomayor are digital.) The signed ink drawing on Bristol board is 22"x17"--double the art cause it's a wraparound variant

Cameos going but not gone

Several people contacted me and added a cameo to their current reward tier. We still have a couple spots left. Let me know!

Closing Ceremony on Facebook at 12:30 pm ET

Hang out with me over Livestream and perhaps have a day drink or two as we close this campaign in style. I'll do a cocktail lesson (a lightish one, it's lunchtime), maybe play a song or two, review highlights of the comic thing, answer any questions, and generally enjoy having a day off to wrap up another successful campaign thanks to hundreds of amazing backers!

EXTRA COCKTAIL CREDIT: Want to be prepared for the cocktail?

Death in the Afternoon

5 oz chilled champagne (or Prosecco or other sparking wine) and 1 oz absinthe. Maybe be kind to yourself with 0.25-0.5 oz simple syrup.

If you have no absinthe or don't want to die quite so quickly in the afternoon, just grab anything that might go well in bubbles: Aperol, sweet vermouth, cassis, any fruity liqueur, even a little bourbon and sugar. Tell me what you've got and we'll riff. You get full marks just for showing up with something liquid.

THANK YOU

Of course I will write a sappier thank you once we’re all wrapped up but, as always, thank you for all your support! This book wouldn’t be what it is without each of you.

Day 24: EAT DESSERT FIRST. MILESTONE REWARD UNLOCKED: WILD NATURE #1 by David Taylor
almost 5 years ago – Thu, Nov 04, 2021 at 10:53:04 PM

 24 HOURS LEFT!

One more day! Thank you all so much for your support, for spreading the word, for asking questions, for being just generally awesome. I'm really lucky to have such a great audience following me on this crazy comics journey. Please double check your pledge and make sure you're getting exactly what you want. Ask questions if you are having any issues. One bit of housekeeping:

CAMEO OPTIONS!

We still have some cameo spots and some folks have asked about adding a cameo on to their other rewards. It's hard to do it as an add on but I'm working it out with backers case by case. If you want to add a cameo drop me a line.

WILD NATURE #1: IT'S A GODDAMN SLAUGHTERHOUSE! by David Taylor

We've seen a spike of activity as often happens in the last two days, and we are just 15 backers away from another Milestone. I feel confident it will happen, so let's celebrate prematurely because I SAID SO. I present to you the (mostly likely) final unlocked milestone in the All-Star Digital Bundle:

Don't worry, it just LOOKS like a VHS tape.

David Taylor is one of my favorite creators and I love his current series, Wild Nature. David is a master of many flavors of comic noir, from lonely towns of the Southwest US to the near-future glitz of a dystopian Miami. Taylor is at his best capturing the brooding, conflicted humanity of his richly imagined characters, and forcing them into impossible choices. I was super excited to learn our campaigns would overlap jut like last time in the summer of 2020. You may remember me talking about this book before. Well, now you get that book for FREE! Thank you David!

It’s year 2080, Miami. Reality television has reached its predictable pinnacle with Wild Nature, a game show where teams of armed combatants stalk each other and fight to the death for fame and fortune. Swan is a former black ops and a legendary champion. Swan’s making big changes in his life, quitting the deathsport that made him rich, and trying to be anyone other than who he really is. And almost no one wants that to happen. Not his best friend, not his fanbase, and definitely not the sinister voice in the back of his mind.

Who can forget Murder Bunny? I just call her that, it's a term of endearment. She makes me feel funny.

Book 1 is a solid 80 pages of awesome and it's all yours in the backers-only update to follow. But don't stop there--Wild Nature 1-2: Make Miami Murder is finshing a successful run on Kickstarter in just a few days. Please back this thing and tell David I made you do it.

Day 23: Return your tray table to the upright position, check your pledges, and join me for a Livestream Closing Ceremony on Friday
almost 5 years ago – Thu, Nov 04, 2021 at 11:11:22 AM

44 hours to go!

This campaign is winding down so let's take care of some important odd and ends.

1) THANK YOU. I am once again astounded that folks from all over the world continue to support this story. I can't wait to get this book out to you, and the ones after that.

2) Check your pledges. Double check you got the right reward level. Take a look at the Add On menu as well, it might have stuff you're looking for and some other surprises. If you have any questions about reward level, shipping or anything else please let me know though this email or by [email protected]

3) International shipping will be added on with the final reward survey via Backerkit.

4) Someone asked if the All-Star Digital Bundle will be sent out as a single update at the end? Sure, I can send it out as an update and again with the Dallas digital rewards once they are ready. The bundle will not all be in on PDF however, it will be a collection of links.

5) Someone asked if the Bug Out Bag can be an add on reward? A great question. As of now I want that bag to remain part of that special collector's tier only, I don't think I should break it up and offer the bag separately.

6) There are still cameo spots left! If you want to be in the book, here’s your chance. Includes a 11x17 poster of your cameo page!

7) For the first time I'd like to do a Livestream closing ceremony on Friday at 12 pm ET. I’l review the campaign, answer questions, maybe play a song or two, and do a little day drinking cocktail class like I used to back duirng peak Covid times of 2020. If you want to be prepared for the cocktail, have a bottle of some kind of sparkling wine and some Absinthe to make a Death in Afternoon. Or whatever you’ve got, no pressure. Here's the link on FB:

Other cool stuff

GORILLA MY DREAMS TEAM-UP #1 - An Action-Packed Monster Romp

Knockaround-Guy and Cthulhu Williams don't always see eye-to-eye. KG is a D-List superhero (and talking gorilla) who solves the weird and bizarre, street-level cases the A-List ignore. Williams is a paranormal investigator/monster hunter who takes his job VERY seriously.

Big Tim Stiles has been putting out the Gorilla My Dreams series for several years, and it is always sure to entertain with a modern riff on classic silver-age comic books with action, comedy and heart, featuring the gorilla you want to root for, Knockaround Guy. This book is a change of pace, featuring a team-up with Cthulu Williams for a profoundly odd buddy adventure.

Wild Nature 1 & 2 | Make Miami Murder - Neon-Noir

Whenever David Taylor makes a thing, I get it. This is a first look at what I am hoping will be the next milestone reward we unlock sometime in the next 44 hours. If we get 30 more backers you’ll all earn the digital Wild Nature #1 as part of the All-Star Digital Bundle. But I want to make sure we give this fantastic series its due and give you time to go check out out Wild Nature #2 and consider backing it at the digital or physical level. Also, I'll be a cameo in it, so that could be fun. I’ll post more about Wild Nature in detail tomorrow, but for now just know that it about a dystopian future Miami where masked gangs hunt each other to the death on live television, and one man’s fight to escape this bleak world he helped create. It is really damn good.
